Pass Plus courses from Bradleys School of Motoring
What is the Pass Plus Course?
Pass Plus was introduced by the DSA in an attempt to help promote safer driving. The Pass Plus course itself can be thought of as 'advanced driving lessons'. They fill in the gaps that the standard driving test doesn't cover and help increase confidence for drivers who have just passed their driving test. It's worth noting that the DSA refer to the Pass Plus modules as a course rather than lessons. There is no test at the end of the course as you are assessed by the driving instructor and not by an examiner. You already know how to drive, the Pass Plus course is to help you gain confidence and experience on roads and in conditions you are unlikely to have faced on your previous driving lessons.
Why should I take Pass Plus?
There are numerous benefits to completing the Pass Plus course. As you must start the course within 12 months of having passed your driving test the most obvious one is the increased confidence that you get on the road. You can even use your own car to take the modules in. There are also insurance companies that offer discounts to people who have completed the Pass Plus course (these can be found on the Pass Plus website). Pass Plus is really about safer driving though, and for this reason alone it is a good idea to consider taking it.
What are the benefits of Pass Plus?
A recent survey carried out on behalf of the DSA showed that amongst those who had take the Pass Plus course:
- 93% felt more confident on the road
- 89% considered that their driving schools had improved
Listed below are the benefits that Pass Plus offers to you as a driver:
- enables you to gain quality driving experience safely
- helps you become a more skillful driver
- teaches you how to develop a Positive Driving style which is both enjoyable and safe
- reduces your risk of being involved in a road crash
- saving you money on your car insurance premiums*
*Subject to status and certain conditions. Check with your insurance company

Pass Plus Modules
Pass Plus Module One: Introduction and Town Driving
This is a 2 part module. The first part is an introduction to the course, checking your eyesight and driving licence, the aims of the course etc. The second part covers Town Driving and is a practical module that covers things such as eye contact, keeping space around your car, multi-lane junctions, trams, buses, etc.
| |
Pass Plus Module Two: All Weather Driving
The chances are that you learned to drive during the spring or summer, when the weather was good. This module covers driving in all kinds of weather conditions such as rain, sleet and snow and even bright sunshine but also covers skidding, aquaplaning, etc. It tells you about appropriate speed, how to see and be seen and applying these methods.
| |
Pass Plus Module Three: Out of Town Driving and Rural Roads
Again there is a good chance that you have driven on some country and rural roads, but this mainly covers dealing with the bends, hills, uneven roads and dead ground as well as things such as how to overtake safely on these kinds of road, when to use the horn, livestock on or near the road and conditions where mud and other debris may occur.
| |
Pass Plus Module Four: Night Driving
This module covers all aspects if driving in the dark including things such as driving in low light conditions (dusk and dawn), how to judge speed and distance, dazzle, parking as well as pedestrians, cyclists, etc.
| |
Pass Plus Module Five: Dual Carriageways
Again you may have done some of this already on your driving lessons but this module covers dual carriageways in much more depth including things such as use of slip roads to both join and leave, judgement and planning including safe distances, use of mirrors and also awareness of blindspots.
| |
Pass Plus Module Six: Motorways
This is the final module of the Pass Plus course and deals entirely with motorways. As a new driver you are unlikely to have ever driven on a motorway and they are not like any other road. Things covered by this module include breakdown procedures, joining and leaving a motorway, crosswinds, signs and signals, road markings, fatigue, etc.
