Theory Test information from Bradleys School of Motoring

About the Theory Test

For around 10 years now the driving test has been split into two separate sections - the theory test and the practical driving test. On this page we will give you some insight into the theory test and what to expect from it as well as tips on the best way to pass it. Remember, if you are with a Bradleys driving instructor then they are able to give you help on the theory test.

The important thing to remember about the theory test is simply this:

You cannot book a practical driving test until you pass your theory test

Sounds straightforward, right? Well yes and no. The theory test certificate itself is only valid for 2 years so once it has lapsed you must go and resit the theory test again after it has expired. We strongly advise pupils to try and get the theory test certificate passed as soon as you start taking lessons. A little practical driving experience with your driving instructor can sometimes make a big difference in understanding the theory test.

How does the Theory Test work?

The theory test is actually split into two parts, although both parts are done at the same place on the same day. The first part is the multiple choice question section and the second part is the hazard perception section. Although they are part of the same test the way that you take them is very different. It's vital to remember that you must pass both parts of the exam at the same time.

Both parts of the test are conducted on computer at a theory test centre for which you must book a time and date. Below each section is explained more clearly.

Part One - Multiple Choice Questions

In this section you are treated to 50 multiple choice questions on subjects that are covered in the highway code as well as some questions that are more common sense based. The questions can, in some cases, have more than one correct answer so it is important to read the question carefully and take note of the instructions given.

Read your Highway Code - a lot of the answers are there

Use other sources too - the PC CD is an excellent way of practising

There are supplimental books such as the official DSA Theory Test book and Know Your Traffic Signs

If you are a Bradleys pupil then ask your driving instructor what other help is available

Hazard perception DVD from the DSA

Part Two - Hazard Perception

In this part of the theory test you are presented with a series of video clips, each of which contains one or more 'developing' hazards. These are hazards that will make you change speed and/or direction and it is important to remember that you are expected to recognise these developing hazards and then identify them by clicking the mouse. Too may clicks in a short space of time will result in you getting '0' marks for that clip though.

Get the PC CD or the DVD (if you don't have a computer) - this is the only way to practice this effectively

As soon as the clip appears then click! Sometimes the hazard is the very first thing you see

Don't be scared to click if you see something early on, but time your clicks so as not to get a '0'

Driving Test Success - PC CD

This is a must have for helping pass the theory test. Without a doubt it is the best way to practice and contains the multiple choice theory test questions and a separate disc for the hazard perception. It also keeps track of your marks and shows you the types of questions that you need the most practice in. These discs also come with an electronic copy of the Highway Code on them. Great value.

DSA Theory Test - Book

The official DSA Theory Test companion book. It contains all of the questions that are currently used by the DSA in the theory test as well as marking sections. Although it lacks the interactive element of the PC CD it is a great way to practice when you are in situations where you cannot access a computer. It also contains all of the answers as well as a copy of the Highway Code in it.
